WHAT IS SONOTOMIA?

SONOTOMIA is a European project that merges two concepts, the intangible and tangible cultural heritage, in a very innovative way.

Music, biodiversity as well as historical sites and buildings are connected to sound in different ways. Sound is a powerful tool to link and connect the past with future, just as cultural heritage does. The values and unique characteristics of shared cultural heritage can be captured and transmitted through shared sounds.

Since sounds are versatile and widespread, promoting and disseminating cultural artefacts through captured and modified sound elements is very compelling and forms the core of this project. The heritage can be preserved and sustained through sounds that can inspire future generations to value and cherish the environment and people around them more.

MISSION

Our mission is art creation by means of connecting sound in specific soundscapes with tangible and intangible cultural heritage, and the exploration of sounds in space for the promotion of cultural heritage with the use of digitisation and ICT technologies via co-creational exercises.

CALENDAR

The first SONOTOMIA residency was hosted in Alentejo, Portugal, between 14 and 21 September 2020.

During that one-week-long residency, 5 residents-participants worked on the topic of recognition and promotion of the Alentejo’s marine and coastal life (including rivers and lakes) through spatial sound recordings, systematisation and archiving and manipulation (scientific and creative co-production).

SONOTOMIA Residence 2.0 was hosted in Albarracín, Spain, from 28 August to 04 September 2021.

During this week-long residency, 7 residents-participants worked on recognising and promoting the Sounds of Albarracín, the soundscapes of the cultural and natural heritage, through spatial sound recordings, systematisation, archiving, and creative as well scientific co-production.

SONOTOMIA Residence 3.0 was hosted in Budapest on May 5-15th, 2022.

During a week, 8 participants worked together to investigate the entangled urban and rural areas that identify the city of Budapest as a socio-cultural, geographical and biophysical environment.

SONOTOMIA Final Event will take place in Odemira, Portugal on November the 5th, 2022.

CALL TO CREATIVE AND CULTURAL PROFESSIONALS

“A soundscape is any collection of sounds, almost like a painting is a collection of visual attractions. … When you listen carefully to the soundscape it becomes quite miraculous.”
